Four ways to take and edit vintage looking photos| Instagram Hacks
Living in Niagara-on-the-Lake has it’s perks. Not only do I get to drink the best wine around, but I also get the best backdrops for photoshoots! I recently went to a close by vineyard for a little vintage inspired photoshoot and loved it. Editing the photos and playing around with props allowed for an authentic vintage feel to come throughâand it can easily be replicated. Here are some tips and tricks to pull off a perfectly edited vintage inspired photoshoot!
Shoot at Golden Hour
Golden hour is the time before the sun sets, and right after it rises. It creates a warm natural glow that editing just can’t recreate. Shoot at golden hour for a beautiful gold hue on each and every one of your photos. The warm tone adds the natural vintage style to the photos. Golden hour also adds a soft and dimensional aspect to your photos. During golden hour the light is travelling through more of the earths atmosphere, making the direct light a lot less harsh on the subject. Since the sun is low in the sky, it adds dimensions to your photo as the light is coming from a lower angle also creating longer and softer shadows.
Add Dust Using Afterlight
Afterlight is an editing application for smartphones offered on the Apple Appstore and the Google Play store for $3.99 CAD. Afterlight is a really good editing app for achieving the vintage look and theme throughout your photos. This is done with the Dust Effect which adds a vintage film effect by applying realistic dust textures on your photos. The dust effect is great because it let’s you control how much dust you add to a photo and has different variations.
Purchase Lightroom presets for the perfect fade
Purchase presets from Do You Travel to add a nice fade and modify the midtones in your the photo. Adding a fade will transform your photo and give it that authentic old-school feel. Remember to add your own touches on Lightroom as not every image has the same lighting so you may need to do some manual adjustments.
Vintage Props
Choose vintage props to add a fun element to your photos. For my photos I chose to use my Out of Office straw hat gifted to me by PanMilli, a vintage looking camera I borrowed from my mother-in-law, plain white shoes from Walmart and a straw bag from Zara. Each of the items are easy to get your hands on, especially since straw items have really come into style for the summer. My favourite prop I used for the shoot has to be my PanMilli straw hat as you can customize them with little quotes or sayings in sequins or pompoms. My hat reads “out of office” in black sequins and it will definitely be a staple in my summer wardrobe and shoots!
